Pottawatomie County Sets New High Mark for Residential Sales in May

Major changes are happening along 24 highway between Manhattan and Wamego. Residential dwelling sales are reaching all-time high marks again.

"We are definitely returning to the high water mark set back in 2006-2007 for residential sales," Pottawatomie County Appraiser Lois Schlegel said Monday in a phone interview after the county commission meeting.

Since the first wave of new construction spiked in 2007, there has been a steady decline, inevitable lull and now swift resurgence. Based on data collected since 1998, a second wave is definitely surging up right now.

"New construction is at an all-time high between Manhattan and Wamego," Schlegel said.

The month of May recorded a total of 53 residential sales, which is 75 percent higher than the average over the last two years.

In addition to an increase in sales, the appraiser's office reported assessed values have actually dropped by $600,000 due to a change in the law governing the assessment of personal property as watercraft. "The change in law assessing watercraft will definitely affect the county," Commissioner Stan Hartwich commented.

In other business:

Leu Lowrey, Pulic Works Director proposed approval of a contract with Farmer's Coop (i.e., MKC) for an electrical easement on the north side of the pump station in Blue Township Sewer District.

Scott Schwinn, nominated Robert Morris, Jr. to serve on the Solid Waste Committee and he was appointed by the commission.

Pottawatomie Wabaunsee Regional Library board is requesting a $27,000 increase for 2015. Traditionally the budget is balanced on weighing the resources of library materials and staff salaries.

"Now that a courier service is available for interlibrary loans competent and well trained staff are more important for the services we want to offer," said Judith Cremer, Regional Library Director.

Lester Harris, representative from Lions Club of Onaga, requested the closing of Carl Rd. during the July 3rd fireworks display in celebration of Independence Day. Commission voted unanimous approval of request.
