Riley/Pottawatomie 4-H Straight Shooters participate in 2 National Shooting Sports Matches

July 24, 2014Eleven members of the Riley/Pottawatomie 4-H Straight Shooters club participated in two National Shooting Sports Matches this summer. Three members participated in two disciplines at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Match held in Grand Island, Nebraska, June 24-29, and eight members participated in the Daisy National BB Gun Championship Match held in Rogers, Arkansas, July 4-6.
In order to participate in the National 4-H Shooting Sports Match, participants must be one of the top 4 eligible shooters at the state match in their discipline. Mattie Swisher, Emmett, and Austin Becker, Manhattan, were members of the Air Pistol team. Richard Becker, Manhattan, Air Pistol coach for the Straight Shooters club, was the Assistant Coach for Team Kansas in this discipline. Matthew Plummer, Wamego, was on the Air Rifle team. Each of these shooters joined other shooters from around the state to form our Team Kansas group of 36 shooters in the 9 disciplines of Air Pistol, Air Rifle, Recurve Archery, Compound Archery, Hunting Skills, Muzzleloading, Shotgun, Small Bore Pistol, and Small Bore Rifle.

Team Kansas placed 3rd in the Overall Team Sweepstakes, behind Texas and Missouri. In Air Pistol competition, Swisher placed 5th in Slow Fire, 5th in Silhouette, 1st in Rapid Fire, and 1st Overall. Becker placed 1st in Silhouette, setting a match record points scored, tied for 20th in Rapid Fire, and placed 8th Overall. The Air Pistol Team placed 2nd Overall. In Air Rifle competition, Plummer placed 13th in 3P, 13th in Silhouette, and 14th Overall. The Air Rifle Team placed 1st Overall.

The Straight Shooters BB Gun team consisted of Dylan Anderson, Leonardville, Brendan Becker, Manhattan, Bryce Beckman, Manhattan, Tyler Beckman, Manhattan, Jessica Blankley, Westmoreland, Dane Louderback, St. George, and Abby Retzlaff, Westmoreland and were coached by Richard Becker, Manhattan, and Robert Retzlaff, Westmoreland. Elle Retzlaff, Westmoreland, participated in the Champion's Match competition. All eight shooters joined 9 other BB Gun teams from Kansas at the Daisy National Match. The team qualified to attend the national match by placing 3rd at the VFW State BB Gun Match in Derby, Kansas.
