Rock Creek lifts their MEL record to 4-0 with 2 wins over Riley County
#22 Junior 1st baseman Shannon Caffrey had 2 triples and a double in the twinbill. Here is her first triple.
May 07, 2014In the first of 2 games played in Riley on May 2nd, Rock Creek survived a late Riley County surge, winning 4-3. Up 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Riley threatened, but a headsy double play and routine out stopped the momentum just in time. Rock Creek outhit Riley 8-7. Rock Creek plated a run in the first inning via a Brynn Hammett walk and stolen base and then a drilled single to earn the RBI from Alexis Wilson. Blair Campbell earned the win to put her 2-0 in MEL games, striking out 5. Blair pitched very efficiently. Wilson went 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Shannon Caffrey had a monster night offensively going 2-4 including a triple. Blair Campbell and Jayden Weers each doubled. Ariel Petty and Kayla Boltz each singled. As the falcons were mounting a comeback in the final inning, with runners at first and second, Brynn Hammett snagged a fly ball in right field for the first out of the inning, throwing it to pitcher Blair Campbell; who made a perfect snap throw to 3rd baseman Ariel Petty for the big double play. The falcons followed with the third out, stopping their 3 run inning.
In game two, Rock Creek took care of business earning their second shutout win of the year 8-0 over the falcons. Behind solid defense, 12 hits and a good pitching outing, Rock Creek prevailed. Again, the mustangs scored early, plating 2 runs in the top of the first to set the tone. The mustangs would add 4 in the third and another 2 in the 6th. Brynn Hammett earned the win and is now 2-0 in MEL play. She struck out 5 and gave up only 2 hits. Caffrey went 3-4 in the game with a double and triple. Abbie Plummer had a 2 hit outing, and 2 stolen bases. Brynn Hammett added 2 hits as well. Winter Henry, Ariel Petty, Kayla Boltz, Alexis Wilson and Jayden weers each added a single to the group effort.
It's always important for us to do the little things well, aside from our short game, I thought we played 2 solid games. Our outfield did a great job of getting to balls – Abbie, Winter, Brynn and Blair did a great job and made good throws. Our catcher Mariah Kinderknecht just quietly does a solid job to manage the game, our pitchers Blair and Brynn did a great job on some of Riley's best offensive players. In addition, we committed minimal errors defensively.
Rock Creek will head to Alma Wabaunsee on Tuesday and then host Silver Lake on Thursday, honoring senior Meagan Smith for senior night.
