Manhattan Optimist Moxie places 2nd in USSSA State Tournament

In a tournament of 19, the Manhattan Optimist Moxie placed 2nd and went 6-2 on the weekend; playing one game on Friday, one Saturday and 6 on Sunday. In the opener Friday night, Moxie squared off with the Wichita Lady Reds and won 7-1, giving up the shut out in the bottom of the 5th with the Reds lone run plating. Moxie managed 8 hits, 2 doubles from Shannon Caffrey, a triple from Linsey Kramer and a double and single from Abbie Plummer. Megan Srna and Brynn Hammett each singled. Hammett earned the win, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 2. Moxie advanced to Saturday's game against the Cheney Lady Lightening team and won 7-0. Moxie had a 6 run third inning that ignited the win. Hammett and Srna each doubled; Kramer, Plummer, Caffrey, Mariah Kinderknecht and Blair Campbell each singled. Campbell earned the win from the mound, pitching effectively allowing only 4 hits. On Sunday morning with 4 winning teams remaining, Moxie dropped their first game to the Frenzy in a 2-1 battle. Moxie managed 4 hits 2 from Shannon Caffrey (who had a dynamic offensive weekend), a double from Megan Srna and single from Blair Campbell. Campbell suffered the loss, despite striking out 4. Now the fun began back to back games for the next 10 hours. Moxie faced off with the SEK Sluggers and won 2-0. Brynn Hammett earned the win 6 K's and allowing only 4 hits. Campbell pitched in relief in the final 2 SEK at bats. Abbie Plummer went 2-3 in the game and scored the two Moxie runs from singles from teammates Caffrey and Hammett. In the game Campbell singled and Srna doubled. It was a battle to the finish. In the bottom of the 6th with time expired, and the leadoff trying to advance, pitcher Campbell picked off the runner to 3rd baseman Linsey Kramer getting the out, in a collision play. It was a huge momentum out for Moxie. Headsy play by Blair and Linsey. In the following game, Moxie played the Topkea Heat, winning 7-2. Campbell earned the win striking out 5. Heat scored in the top of the first. To answer, Blair Campbell singled and Shannon Caffrey sent a ball 220 feet over the fence to go up 2-1. Hammett doubled, Caffrey and Alexis Campuzano each went 2-3 in the game. Kayla Boltz, Plummer, and Campbell each singled. In their 4th game of the day, Moxie was able to avenge an earlier game with the Frenzy winning 8-2. After retiring the sides Moxie had an offensive inning to remember. Plummer reached via a walk, Brynn Hammett homered. Shannon Caffrey singled then followed by an Alexis Campuzano homerun. Up 4-0, Moxie played the rest of the game with confidence. Kayla Boltz went 2-2 with 2 doubles, Megan Srna went 2-2, Campuzano went 2-2, Abbie Plummer singled. This win put Moxie into the championship game against SEK Landsharks who were undefeated, and have previously been state champions. Moxie won in exciting fashion. SEK took a 4-0 lead through the first three innings Moxie added 3. Down 4-3, in the fifth, SEK added one Moxie ignited in the bottom of the 5th with two runs. Defense held in the sixth and in the bottom of the 6th with time expired, Abbie Plummer and Blair Campbell singled; with 2 outs Shannon Caffrey drove home Plummer with a single to left; forcing the "if" game. Caffrey went 3-4 in the game with a double, Campbell went 2-4, Srna doubled and singled, Boltz and Miranda Hemmer each singled. Alexis McCormick served as the courtesy runner for Campbell and plated two runs. Blair Campbell pitched for the win. In the championship game, Moxie held their own and led until the fifth. Up 3-2. Then after 5 innings the game was knotted up 4-4. In the 7th inning in ITB SEK Landsharks came to life and scored 6. Heading into the final inning, down 10-4, Moxie made a surge and scored 3 and batted around before the game finished 10-7. Hammett pitched for the loss, Campbell pitched in the 7th. Plummer and Campbell each doubled. Caffrey went 2-4, Hammett, Srna, Hemmert and Kinderknecht each singled. SEK Landsharks come from Frontenac and Girard teams and were a formidable champion. Moxie played more games than anyone at the state tournament and was the only team to defeat the SEK Landsharks. Certainly a testament to their team name. Moxie finishes their season 26-11-2.
