Manhattan Optimist Moxie went 8-2 and finished 3rd in the Summer Smash in Kansas City

June 25, 2014The Manhattan Optimist Moxie team opened the weekend on Friday night with an 8:40 game against the Columbia Rockers; winning 14-0. Brynn Hammett was a dual threat going 2-2 and pitching for the shut out win while striking out 10. Alexis Campuzano had 2 doubles as Moxie combined for 11 hits in the blow out win. Moxie turned around and played a 10:00 game against the Topeka Zone, winning a close game 3-2. Moxie collected 8 hits; none bigger than Kayla Boltz's double that drove home 2 runs in the first. Blair Campbell earned the tough win striking out 6.
On Saturday, Moxie won both pool play games and finished 4-0 in pool play. The first of those games was against KC Fire, 10-3 was the final score. Moxie belted out 15 hits with Linsey Kramer, Mariah Kinderknecht, Shannon Caffrey, Boltz and Hammett each having a multiple hit game. Campbell pitched for the win, Caffrey also pitched in relief. In the last pool play game, Moxie faced Mustang Stampede and defeated them 10-4. Moxie had 11 hits, 6 (2 each) from Alexis Wilson, Miranda Hemmert and Hammett; Hammett also earned the win. As the 1 seed in bracket play, Moxie was pitted against the Minneapolis (MN) Heat. Moxie got more hits (9 – 6), just not more runs, and committed more errors (5) in the game, losing 6-4. Alexis Campuzano had 2 hits including a homerun, while Kayla Boltz also had 2 hits with a double. Campbell had 5 strikeouts in the loss.
Sunday's bracket play continued for Moxie in the double elimination tournament, 5 consecutive games beginning at 8:00 a.m. Moxie ended up playing KC Fire again, winning 5-0. Moxie had 10 hits and Hammett won striking out 5. The 9:30 game was against a tough Ruffnecks team, Moxie prevailed 10-5. Alexis Campuzano went 4-4 in the game, and Kayla Boltz doubled twice to lead the offense. Campbell earned the win. At 11:00, Moxie defeated Topeka Toxic by a score of 9-5. Hammett went 3-3 and Kinderknecht was 2-2 from the plate. Campbell pitched well for the win. At 12:30, Moxie faced off with the Minneapolis Heat again, this time prevailing by 9-5. Caffrey, Plummer, Campuzano and Wilson each notched 2 hits apiece. Hammett earned the win, with Caffrey and Campbell each pitching in the final inning. In the 2:00 game against the Topeka Stingers, Moxie led the entire game until a late rally in the top of the 7th, losing 5-4 to the eventual tournament champions. Moxie captured a 3rd place finish, in the original pool of 19 teams, and the winner's bracket pool of 9.
