Ronald J. “Cowman” Powell, 77, of Wamego, Kansas, formerly of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013, at his home. He had been a Wamego resident since 2008.
Ron was born December 6, 1935, in Hutchinson, the son of Chester W. and Alma Dunkin Powell. He attended local schools and graduated from Hutchinson High School.
Ron spent twelve years in the military, he began in the US Navy reserves and then he enlisted into the United States Air Force. He was a Tech Sergeant and was stationed in Spain.
He married Shirley Burns on January 7, 1956, in Omaha, Nebraska. She survives at their home.
Ron was a Dairy Herdsman and owned and operated a dairy operation near Hutchinson. He also enjoyed driving his own race car. After retiring from farming, he traveled the Sprint car racing circuit selling specialized racing tires, where he earned his nick name, “Cowman”. His dairy farm also sponsored a car in the NCRA. Prior to his dairy farming, he worked for the Hutchinson Fire Department.
Ron is also survived by his four children Ronald J. Powell, Haven, Charisse M. West and her husband, Terry, Wamego, William C. Powell and his wife, Ann, Kansas City, Missouri, and Lori A. Schneider and her husband, Tom, Cheney; eight grandchildren, Josh, Audrey, Emily, Elizabeth, Luke, Sam, Jamie and Brook; and four great-grandchildren, Jordan, Noah, Alissa, and Landyn. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Dee Ann Collins.
Memorial services will be held in Wichita and that information is pending. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Cancer Center of Kansas or Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and those may be sent in care of Campanella-Evans Mortuary.
