Henrietta Loreen Matzke, 89, of Blaine, Kansas, died Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Stormont-Vail Health Care in Topeka. She was a life-long resident of the area.
Henrietta was born July 15, 1924, in Wheaton, Kansas, the daughter of Alfonso F. and Emma Kohn Kufahl. She attended local schools and graduated from Wheaton Rural High School in 1942.
She married Melvin D. Matzke on March 8, 1945, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Duluth. He survives at their home.
Henrietta was a homemaker and farm wife. She enjoyed raising her family and helping milk the cows. She was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton and LWML. She served as a Sunday School teacher and enjoyed singing in the church choir. She also sang with the Ladies Aid group at the local care homes. She was a charter member of the Sunflower Club and a former board member of the Wheaton Center. Henrietta was proud of her participation with the American Red Cross Blood drives and gave 78 units over her life time. She also enjoyed playing softball for many years.
Henrietta is also survived by her daughters, Wanda Magnett and her husband, Kenny, Blaine, and Vanessa Hill, Topeka; her sons, Alvin Matzke and his wife, Deloris, Westmoreland, and Stanley Matzke and his wife, Victoria, Blaine; sister, Wilma Abitz, Wheaton; ten grandchildren, twenty two great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Kent Magnett, 1990, great-great-grandson, Bentley Reed, 2011, son-in-law, Carl Hill, 2007, and daughter-in-law, Kathryn Matzke, 1985.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 24, 2013, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton, Kansas. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery south of Wheaton. Mrs. Matzke will lie-in-state on Friday, at the church, starting at 4:00 p.m. and the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. They suggest memorial contributions to St. Luke Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Hour or a charity of the donor’s choice, and those may be sent in care of Kufahl Funeral Home in Wheaton.
