In games played on Monday, April 8th, the Mustang softball team traveled to Clay Center. The mustangs dropped both games 9-10 and 2-17. The first game was a teeter totter game that presented chances for the young mustangs to capitalize, leaving 10 runners on base, and committing 8 errors in the field didn’t help. Mariah Kinderknecht was an impressive 3-3 from the plate with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. Heather Gardner tripled. Ariel Petty doubled and singled with 2 RBI’s. Abbie Plummer doubled and singled. Bethany Goehring showed up at the plate with a 3-4 effort. Dakota Nelson singled. Shannon Caffrey pitched for the loss, but struck out 6 and didn’t give up a walk. Defensively, the mustangs needed to secure a few more routine outs, but did have a nice double play – ground ball to SS Gardner, to 1st – Nelson who had a snap throw to Kinderknecht at the plate for the outs. This was the first game of the 2013 season for the mustangs, certainly a place to start and work up from.
In game two, Abbie Plummer had the lone hit, and the mustangs had 8 strike outs against a very salty JV pitcher from Clay Center. The mustangs runs both came from Plummer, one via an Ariel Petty ground ball RBI. Amber Nowakowsi was the starting pitcher and threw for the first 2 innings, Saige Biedenbender finished the game for the last two innings prior to the 2-17 finish after 4. The girls struck out 2 and 1 respectively.
The Rock Creek JV has an action packed week ahead, hosting Silver Lake Thursday, April 11 and hosting a tournament and double header over the weekend. Games will be played Saturday, April 13th at St. George. Rock Creek will play Royal Valley at 10:00; Royal Valley vs. Washburn Rural at 11:30 and Rock Creek vs. Washburn Rural at 1:00. Those games will be followed by a double header against Herington.
